What private home care is, and who it is for
Private home care means a caregiver comes to the home, on hours your family sets, to help with the things that keep an older person safe, comfortable and in good company. It is for the parent who is managing but no longer managing alone. It is for the spouse who has been the full-time caregiver and needs a break. It is for the family that got a call after a fall or a hospital stay and needs help in place within days, not months.
Most calls come from an adult son or daughter. Often they have noticed that Mom or Dad needs more than family alone can give, and they want someone dependable who will come back visit after visit rather than a rotating roster.
Private home care and WRHA Home Care
The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority runs Manitoba’s public Home Care Program. It is free to eligible residents, but the hours are set by an assessment, the schedule is fixed, and you do not choose who comes to the door. Private care fills the gaps: evenings, weekends and overnights, longer visits, companionship and outings, and a caregiver your family picked and kept.
The two work together. Many of our clients keep their WRHA visits and add private hours on top. Families approved for Manitoba’s Self and Family Managed Care program can also direct their public funding to a private agency like ours.
What we do in the home
Personal care. Respectful, one-to-one help with the private daily routines that keep someone comfortable and confident at home, planned with your family after a first conversation.
Companionship and outings. Conversation, shopping and errands, getting to and from medical appointments, and day outings around Winnipeg with the same friendly caregiver each time.
Respite care. A caregiver steps in so a family caregiver can rest, work, travel or keep their own appointments. An afternoon, a full day or up to 24 hours at a time, planned or on short notice.
Overnight care. A caregiver in the home through the night, there for nighttime routines and if your loved one wakes and needs a hand.
Light housekeeping and meals. A tidy, safe home and home-cooked food, done by the same caregiver as part of the visit rather than as a separate service.
Senior care at home or a care home?
Families often start by asking whether it is time for a personal care home. For many, the honest answer is not yet. With a regular visit for personal care, company for errands and appointments, and someone in the home overnight when needed, most seniors can keep living where they are happiest, in the house and the neighbourhood they know. Home care also scales: a few hours a week can become daily visits, then overnight or 24-hour care, without a move. Some of our families have stayed with us through that whole arc. When a care home does become the right choice, we can keep visiting there too, for companionship and continuity.
How scheduling works
Visits have a 3-hour minimum and run seven days a week, including holidays. Care usually starts within days of the free consultation, and short-notice respite is often possible when a caregiver is available. From there you can book regular visits, add overnight or 24-hour coverage, or change the plan as needs change. One phone call reaches the owner, not a call centre.
Who comes to the door
Every caregiver is insured and personally selected by the owner, Loreta Stukaite, who has run Friendly Caregiver Seniors Care since 2009. Caregivers complete a criminal record check, an adult abuse registry check and a child abuse registry check. Loreta matches each caregiver to the client’s personality and needs and attends the first visit herself. Consistency is the point: the same caregiver, visit after visit.
